Whenever I come to the UK to visit my family I try to take a trip to Bury St Edmunds and the Angel Hotel.
The wine list is reasonable and in this case we had an excellent Malbec.
The menu is very diverse and has many alternatives that I wanted to try.
I am glad 5 of us went so we could share tastes and I'll report on the dishes I tasted.
Grilled Squid in Chilli ... amazing, grilled to perfection (just cooked enough, not tough or dry).
Crab Ravioli, OK but not exceptional.
Lambs Kidneys on toast also amazing, great taste and consistency.
Main plaice was fresh and delicious.
Duck was cooked just right and not fatty at all, cherry sauce tasty.
Steak was exceptionally good but the star of the meal was the rump of lamb which melted in the mouth.
The service was very good and the restaurant has a good ambiance.
Prices were very reasonable and would have been double in the capital.
This really is excellent British food with the best ingredients and a very creative chef.
To my taste it's a solid 5 star establishment. (In a very elegant country setting). -

Great dinning experience from start to end. Make sure to reserve a table. We had good seating and attentive service. Our meals were a 50/50 of good and bad. For starters, we had the crab ravioli and the smoked scallops. The scallops were delicious while the ravioli were disappointing. For our main course we had the Guinea fowl and the duck (the duck is currently not on their online menu). Once again we were split. The fowl was well prepared and tasty while the duck was dry and disappointing. There are a number of other items on the menu I'm looking forward to trying so we will most likely be headed back to the Angel Hotel

Haven't been to the restaurant, just had snacks in the lounge area. Excruciatingly slow service, like almost an hour to order and then another half hour for the food. Way too much woodsmoke from the fireplace. Good but overpriced sandwiches when they finally arrived.
